GetLocalPost is an AI-driven local news site. Our system regularly checks online government resources, identifies new information, assesses it for news value, and publishes stories when the system predicts that the information is either important or interesting to our audience.
While humans are involved in building, refining and running the system, no human actually touches the stories.
Does the AI makes mistakes?
Yes. So do humans.
When the AI makes a mistake and you notice it, please let us know. Your feedback helps us make the AI system better.
Who are you?
My name is Matt M. Casey. I worked as a journalist for a decade before pivoting to a career in data science.
Why are you doing this?
I believe that local news is important and insufficiently covered. This project aims to fill the gaps.
Won’t this will put reporters out of jobs?
No. At present, this work is simply not getting done. Newsrooms no longer have the funding to cover local news thoroughly. I hesitated for years on building this system because I was afraid that it could put my colleagues out of work, but now other forces have already done so.
Are your AI reporters as good as humans?
No. At least not the best of them. The best of my colleagues would write circles around my AI newsroom—and many still do. At present, this system is not capable of real, in-depth investigative work. I hope that the surface-level work that the system can do might help true reporters to spot bigger, better stories.
