Mayor Mamdani Announces Historic $5 Million Settlement for Delivery Workers’ Rights

Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently announced a significant settlement involving over $5 million in restitution for delivery workers affected by unfair practices from major delivery apps. This settlement aims to compensate nearly 50,000 delivery workers, with particular provisions to reinstate up to 10,000 who were wrongfully deactivated.

The settlement includes substantial payments from Uber Eats, Fantuan, and HungryPanda. Uber Eats will provide $3.15 million to approximately 48,000 workers, while Fantuan and HungryPanda will contribute over $468,000 and $1.07 million respectively. These payments arise from findings that these companies violated the city’s Minimum Pay Rate by not compensating workers for canceled trips (Source: https://youtu.be/hPtLfXNxbok&t=25).

During a public meeting, Mayor Mamdani expressed a commitment to rectify past wrongs and emphasized the need to support the city’s delivery workers, many of whom are immigrants. “This moment sends an unmistakable message. Deliveristas have power, and we will no longer accept exploitation,” he stated, encouraging continued enforcement of workers’ rights (Source: https://youtu.be/hPtLfXNxbok&t=947).

Commissioner Sam Levine highlighted that this settlement marks a historic step for workers in the city. “The delivery worker protections are real. They are enforceable standards with real consequences,” Levine noted. This victory also represents the administration’s broader efforts to enhance protections for delivery workers amidst ongoing challenges from app companies (Source: https://youtu.be/hPtLfXNxbok&t=765).

In responding to questions about the distribution of the restitution, the DCWP indicated that these funds would go directly to affected workers, benefitting not only their lost wages but also providing compensatory damages for the violations they experienced. The specifics of each worker’s compensation will depend on their individual circumstances during the stipulated period of violations (Source: https://youtu.be/hPtLfXNxbok&t=1035).

This settlement also dovetails with ongoing initiatives to enforce new delivery worker protection laws that recently came into effect. These laws aim to improve pay transparency and ensure minimum compensation rights for all contracted delivery personnel (Source: https://youtu.be/JGdCR7hf7S8&t=0).
