NYPD Oversight in Jeopardy: Staffing Cuts Challenge Accountability Amid Obstructed Investigations



The oversight of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) has come under scrutiny as the Department of Investigation (DOI) grapples with staffing challenges in its Office of the Inspector General for the NYPD (OIG NYPD). During a recent meeting, officials discussed how staffing reductions have affected the unit’s ability to conduct thorough oversight of police operations.

The OIG NYPD currently employs only nine staff members, a significant decrease from the 16 positions filled in 2023.
